Should Massachusetts Get a USPTO Satellite Office?

On July 13th the first USPTO satellite office will open in Detroit.  Two more will follow in the next two years.  While the locations are currently unknown the announcements are expected to come soon.

According to the Boston Patent Law Associations (BPLA) comments to the USPTO, the best spot in our country for a USPTO satellite office would be in our own backyard, Boston, MA.  Based on the number of reasons BPLA was able to outline in its comments to the USPTO, it’s a wonder why a satellite office isn’t located in Boston already.  Numbers examined by BPLA indicated Boston and New England lead the country in:
•    Highest innovation density
•    Highest employee retention
•    Highest graduation rate in advanced science and engineering degrees
•    Highest concentration and diversity of science and engineering employment
•    Per capita patents granted by the USPTO to private companies in 2009

After reading this, you may be thinking the same thing I am: Why wouldn’t the USPTO open a satellite office in Boston?  Hopefully, in the not so distant future we won’t be asking that question.
